Love gardening but still find seed saving a mystery?
Join this informal workshop to learn seed saving basics and find out what kinds of seeds save home gardens. Start saving your own seeds this year and save money, adapt plants to your garden’s conditions and have plenty of seed to share with friends and family.
By saving the seeds from your best-performing plants each year, you will begin to create a collection of seeds that have adapted to your growing conditions specifically. For the most part, saving seeds doesn’t cost much else besides your time and care for the practice. If done right, these methods will also allow you to begin creating your own heirloom varieties for your favourite plants.
This workshop will provide you with the basic knowledge behind seed saving. We will cover the following:
-Discussion of the basics of plant reproduction
-Discussion of the easiest plants to save for beginners (compared to plants that require a lot of effort to save seeds from)
-Explanation of the vocabulary used in seed saving
-Hands on activities with seasonal varieties of plants as a demonstration of seed harvesting
-Demonstration of how to use other common seed saving equipment and tools
Seed saving is a growing movement which encourages the growing of heirloom & open-pollinated seeds for gardeners, farmers & future generations.
This workshop is free & open to the public No experience necessary!
