This summer J. Kathleen (Joan) Thompson will be riding her bike almost 6,000 kilometers from Vancouver to Halifax to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer has few symptoms and as a result is usually diagnosed in the late stages.
Joan lost her sister, Sheila Rae, to this disease in 2018 and has taken on this challenge to help more women learn the symptoms and to raise funds for improved knowledge and research that can save lives.
Joan is a retired teacher and avid traveler who has taken on other endurance challenges, including El Camino in Spain and biking the Silk Road in Central Asia. These experiences have prepared her for the ride of her life, which starts May 14.
Throughout the ride, Joan will be speaking to communities along the route through scheduled events and informal welcome and send offs, local media interviews and more. Follow the Facebook to stay connected to journey from anywhere.
Hear Joan Thompson tell of her fantastic journey across Canada at 7 pm on Friday, May 24th at the Creston Valley Public Library (531 – 16th Avenue South). For more information, please contact the library at 250-428-4141.
