The Creston Public Library is pleased to introduce its Living Books – Travel Edition speaker series. The speaker this month is Kaca Hegerova as she leads us on the 6 week walking pilgrimage of the 88 temples of Shikoku Japan.

Kaca and her husband Karel are avid walkers and world travelers. After completing the Santiago Pilgrimage in Spain they were ready for something different. A friend mentioned this walking tour in Japan and a long tiring day of work then lead to the decision – they were going!

It didn’t take long to get airplane tickets to Osaka. They got as much information as they could get on the pilgrimage. Packed and repacked so their bags would contain all they would need for 6 weeks of walking while weighing as little as possible. In less than a month they were on their way to Japan.

The approximately 1,200 kilometer circulatory pilgrimage around Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four main islands, is most commonly known as Ohenro. This pilgrimage is the most well-known pilgrimage today, both within Japan and abroad. Every year hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from Japan and elsewhere will be found following the route. The temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage are scattered across the whole of the island, mostly on or very near the coast, and while some are found a little inland on mountains, the interior of the island is avoided. Japanese people are very welcoming to a pilgrim and it is an incredible experience.

Living “books” are real people, your friends and neighbours, volunteering to share aspects of their own “story”. Through living books the library seeks to encourage the sharing of knowledge and passion between people. Each month, the library hosts a get-together where a member of your community shares their personal experiences. This year we are focusing on the topic of travel as tourist guides are a very popular genre at the library. Now see travel guides come to life and draw you in with stories and images.

All are welcome to hear Kaca’s presentation on Wednesday, May 30th at 7pm in the Creston Public Library. Admission is free.
